Series win, check. Could the first sweep of the season be next?

With their first series win of the season secured, the Mariners look to take it to the limit and earn a sweep. Bryce Miller will take the mound for the Mariners, looking to start a new streak for walkless innings after the current streak was snapped last night when Logan Gilbert walked a batter in the seventh. That streak did set a franchise record of 35 consecutive innings without a walk. Miller will also have the opportunity to extend the Mariners’ quality start streak, which dates back to April 10 at Toronto. Speaking of the Mariners’ pitching, Zach Mason made this fun graph for you:

schaden, meet freude

Lineups:

Many starting pitchers are different on their start days, getting locked in however they do, be that with music or sitting quietly at their lockers or not making eye contact with anyone. Bryce, apparently, likes to check his Twitter notifications:

(For context: Bryce ranked 9th on “Whiskey Riff’s” list of best MLB country walkup songs for using Whiskey Myers’ “Bury My Bones.” You can see the whole list here.)

News:

  • The Mariners have reinstated Sam Haggerty from the 10-day IL and optioned him to Triple-A Tacoma.

  • 2013: Félix Hernández and the Tigers’ Max Scherzer each strike out 12 over eight innings and allow one run, but get no help from their offenses, which strike out a combined 40 times as the Mariners lose 2-1 in 14 innings.
  • 2016: Hisashi Iwakuma becomes the seventh Japanese-born pitcher to make 100 career starts, joining Hideo Nomo (318), Hiroki Kuroda (211), Tomo Ohka (178), Daisuke Matsuzaka (132), Masato Yoshii (118) and Kazuhisa Ishii (102).
