Sproat, Tidwell and Scott Pitch Well in Minors

0 6

On Tuesday night, the Mets got strong starting pitching at every level of their system. From Christian Scott in Triple-A to Kade Morris in Class-A, Mets starters had great nights across the board. Mets affiliates went 3-1 on Tuesday, including a Syracuse victory that was highlighted by Mark Vientos‘ first triple of the year. The Cyclones’ bats remained silent, but St. Lucie’s offense displayed their strengths for yet another night.

Triple-A
Syracuse 8, Charlotte 2
BOX SCORE

  • RHP Christian Scott (W, 2-0): 5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
  • RHP Cole Sulser: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
  • LHP Tyler Jay: 2 IP, H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

The Syracuse Mets blasted the Charlotte Knights on Tuesday night, winning 8-2. The story of the game was the strong outing from the Mets’ top pitching prospect, RHP Christian Scott. Scott had 19 strikeouts in nine innings entering his start and added to those totals. Paired with Mike Vasil, Scott figured to be a strong two-headed monster for the Syracuse squad this year. While Vasil has struggled, Scott has been as good as advertised, if not better.

Mark Vientos continued his scorching start for the Syracuse Mets. After his strong showing in this game, Vientos now owns a slash-line of .296/.397/.537 (.934 OPS) with six extra-base hits; three of those being homers. Vientos’ strong start becomes of larger importance after Brett Baty left the Mets’ Tuesday night game (Mets initially saying day-to-day with hamstring tightness) with the Pirates after the conclusion of the sixth inning.

Double-A
Binghamton 3, Reading 2
BOX SCORE

Max Kranick made his first rehab start with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, and he dazzled. Kranick struck out six of his eight recorded outs, walked just one, and did not give up a single hit. Trey McLoughlin recorded the final out of the third, before giving way to bulk-man Blade Tidwell. Tidwell went five innings, allowing just two runs, walking three, and setting a young-season high in 10 strikeouts. Tidwell turned in his best outing of the early campaign, before giving way to closer Wilkin Ramos, who notched his third save of the year in a clean inning of work in the ninth.

The Binghamton bats did not do much on Tuesday night, but they were able to do just enough to earn a victory for the fourth time this year. Kevin Parada and Jett Williams both walked twice, with Parada doing his part to keep his absurd on-base start to the year still going. His OBP now sits at .483. Rhylan Thomas led the Ponies in hits and made up for half of the team’s hit output himself. Matt Rudick’s double served as the big blow of the night, driving in two runs.

High-A
Jersey Shore 3, Brooklyn 1
BOX SCORE

  • RHP Brandon Sproat: 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
  • RHP Diosmerky Taveras: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
  • RHP Victor Castaneda: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Brandon Sproat followed up his solid debut in his last outing with another good outing for the Cyclones. Sproat was able to work down the walks, going from five in his last outing, to just two on Tuesday night. His five strikeouts match what he posted in his last start. Tavares and Castaneda both turned in strong relief appearances after questionable starts to the season, but their efforts went for naught after another offensive drought for the bats.

The Cyclones bats did not show up for their game tonight. Mateo Gil hit his first homer of the year, Ryan Clifford singled, and those were Brooklyn’s only hits of the night. The Cyclones’ bats have struggled all year, and tonight might have been their worst showing of the year. They have scored more than three runs just once this year. Top prospect Ryan Clifford has just a .592 OPS on the year.

Class-A
St. Lucie 11, Tampa 3
BOX SCORE

  • RHP Kade Morris: 4.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
  • RHP Wilson Lopez: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, BB, 5 K
  • RHP Jimmy Loper: 2 IP, 2 H, R, ER, BB, 4 K

2023 3rd-round draft selection Kade Morris made another start for the St. Lucie Mets on Tuesday night, and he turned in yet another solid outing. Morris came just short of five innings, leaving after allowing one last base runner, and coming just short of the five innings needed to qualify for his win. Morris struck out five, worked around nine base runners, and allowed just two runs. He was followed by an incredible relief performance by both Wilson Lopez and Jimmy Loper: 4.1 IP, just two hits, only one run, and nine strikeouts.

Lopez was the hardest thrower in Low-A on Tuesday night, hitting 99 mph on three occasions.

The St. Lucie offense exploded again tonight, this time to the tune of 11 runs. Six Mets reached base twice, including one with four hits and one with five. Ronald Hernandez continued to be an on base machine, raising his OBP to .463 on the season. Nick Morabito, much like Hernandez, continued his torrid on-base work. Morabito’s OPS shot up to 1.040. Estarling Mercado reached base four times, with two being the painful way: a pair of hit-by-pitches. Vincent Perozo, along with Mercado, both doubled. Baez doubled twice himself, and his slugging percentage jumped to the .500 mark on the year.
