[Men's Basketball] Men's Basketball Rallies from 23-Point Deficit
Doane Men's Basketball turned a potential lopsided battle into a record-breaking night as the Tigers rallied for a monumental victory over Northwestern on Saturday, 101-90 in overtime. The Red Raiders, receiving votes in the national poll, held a 23-point lead only to see Doane pick up their largest come-from-behind win in program history.
Northwestern hit a 3-point basket on their opening possession and never looked back in the first half. Through 16 minutes of play, the Red Raiders were shooting 85-percent from the floor as they built their 23-point advantage. Northwestern entered the game averaging 12 made 3-point baskets per game and behind 67-percent shooting from behind the arc, they had 12 at halftime.
Doane closed the opening half with a 12-3 run, cutting the deficit to a manageable 14 points, 54-40, at the break. Doane shot 50-percent from the floor for the half while NWC finished the half at 67-percent as they cooled down in the final four minutes.
The Red Raiders pushed their lead back to 20 points just three minutes into the second half of play. A 10-3 run by the Tigers, sparked by eight points from Brady Timm (SO/Yutan, Neb.), cut the lead to 13 points with 13:41 to play. Trailing by 15 with 12 minutes to play, Doane finally cut the deficit to single digits with a 10-0 run supported by back-to-back 3-point baskets from Cooper Peterson (JR/Edmond, Okla.) and Ben Renshaw (SO/Sioux Falls, S.D.).
Trailing by six points, 82-76, with 3:25 to play, Doane went on a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game. Brady Timm made two free throws with 17 seconds to give the Tigers an 85-82 lead on Northwestern. Following a timeout, the Red Raiders struggled to find a clean pass as Doane applied pressure on the defensive end. A loose ball was picked up by Kaleb Booth and he fired up a deep 3-point shot as time expired and caught nothing but net to send the game to overtime.
The extra stanza started with the teams exchanging 3-point baskets. Doane took the lead for good on a Timm jumper and a three-point play by Alec Oberhauser (SR/Parkersburg, Iowa). Northwestern scored on a pair of free throws with 1:05 left to play and Doane closed the game on an 8-0 run for the final scoring.
Timm scored a career-high 29 points to go with seven assists and three steals. Oberhauser added 28 points as he combined with Timm to go 11-of-11 at the free throw line. Nick Saiz (JR/Lexington, Neb.) finished with 11 points while Cooper Sheldon (JR/Loveland, Colo.) came off the bench to record a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Renshaw added 10 points off the bench as Doane out-scored Northwestern, 31-5, in points off the bench.
Northwestern received a career-high 27 points from Dillon Carlson as he hit his first seven 3-point attempts in the game. All five starters finished in double-figures for the Red Raiders.
Doane shot 50.7-percent for the game, hitting 12-of-30 from behind the arc and 19-of-21 at the free throw line. Northwestern also shot 50.7-percent (both teams were 35-of-69), hitting 16-of-36 from behind the arc, and 4-of-5 at the free throw line.
The Tigers will take on undefeated Morningside on November 22, in Crete at 7:45 PM for their next outing. The Mustangs are also coming in off two big wins, knocking off No. 16 Carroll (Mont.) on Friday and No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday.
