Max Scherzer Ready to Rejoin Mets

The Mets are getting their ace back.

Or at least that’s what he says.

Following his second rehab appearance for the Mets Double-A affiliate Binghamton Rumble Ponies, Max Scherzer was asked if he needed another start in the minors.

Scherzer replied with confidence.

“No.”

Scherzer has been on the injured list since May 18th, when he removed himself in the sixth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals. Soon after it was announced the 37-year-old had a moderate to high grade oblique strain. The original timetable for his return was six-to-eight weeks.

It’s been six weeks and Scherzer is itching to get back to the big league mound.

On Wednesday night against the Hartford Yard Goats, Scherzer pitched 4 2/3 innings, throwing 80 pitches. In his first rehab start made on Tuesday, June 21, Scherzer went 3 1/3 innings, throwing 65 pitches.

Last week Scherzer was asked if he wants to be fully stretched out before returning.

“If I can get back here throwing 70-80 pitches, give me the ball,” he said.

It’s time.

The earliest Scherzer will presumably pitch is Monday against the Cincinnati Reds.

The reeling Mets need Scherzer back. His sheer presence alone should translate to a better July than June. With regression from Carlos Carrasco, Chris Bassitt‘s struggles, and even more injuries to the rotation the Mets should be thankful Scherzer is only missing the minimum amount of time.
