[Softball] Softball Nipped Twice by Mustangs

0 37

Doane Softball hooked up with Morningside on Friday afternoon in Crete. It was a blustery day, setting up for a pair of pitcher's duels in the doubleheader. Morningside took game one, 2-0, and then held on for a 2-1 win in game two. Following the games, the Tigers honored their three seniors, Alicia Vint (JR/Onalaska, Wash.), Haley Kennedy (SR/Lincoln, Neb.), and Shelby Downard (JR/Marysville, Kan.).

In the first game, Morningside scored twice in the second inning and that would account for the runs in the game. The Mustangs had a solo home run in the inning and a RBI-single for an unearned run.

Doane was held to one hit in the game, a double off the bat of Megan Elliott (SO/Simi Valley, Calif.) which broke up a perfect game in the fifth inning. Elliott would also draw a walk in her next at-bat and would be the only Tiger to reach base.

Downard was in the circle for the Tigers and limited Morningside to four hits while allowing two runs, one earned, with seven strikeouts.

In game two, Morningside scored twice in the 3rd inning to account for their runs. The Mustangs loaded the bases with no outs and would use two sacrifice flies to plate the runs.

Doane came back in the bottom of the 3rd as Payton Cooley (SO/Omaha, Neb.) tripled and came in to score on a ground out by Grace Dowding (FR/Firth, Neb.). Cooley would be the only base runner in the game for the Tigers.

Emily Haines (SO/Folsom, Calif.) limited Morningside to four hits while allowing two runs, one earned, and striking out one.
