David Wright Wishes He Could Be in Mets' 2022 Lineup

Former Mets captain David Wright was in Mets camp on Thursday and spent some time speaking with the media.

Wright spoke highly of the 2022 New York Mets lineup, saying they’re loaded with talent and he wishes he could be in the lineup with such a talented group. “Just looking around (that room), it’s all-star, all-star, all-star, soon-to-be all-star. It’s pretty wild,” Wright said of the 2022 lineup.

When asked to speak to the hitters at the end of their hitters meeting, Wright’s main statement, “I wish I could be in this lineup.” Wright believes the Mets have one of the top lineups in the league and a lineup very capable of “scoring some runs.”

When asked about Francisco Lindor’s slow start in 2021 to the explosive spring he’s beginning to have, leading the team offensively in the last week, Wright said he expects it to be a big bounce-back year for the Mets’ shortstop.

“It’s a real thing when you come and you have the expectation of you’re going to be the savior of this organization and you get off to a slow start, then you start pressing,” Wright said about transitioning from a smaller-market team such as the Cleveland Indians, to a big-market team and city such as New York and dealing with Mets fans. He reminisced about Carlos Beltran first coming to New York and starting slow before having some of the best offensive seasons in Mets history as he grew more comfortable in the organization. Wright said he expects the same of Lindor.

“A lot of it were probably expectations that he put on himself. As athletes you always want to live up to the hype, live up to the contract,” said Wright. He explained how when you go out and play your game, and play the way you did when you were awarded that contract, that everything else takes care of itself. Wright believes that now that Lindor has his first year behind me, that he will settle down and bounce back this season.

Wright spoke on his personal life as well. He said all his 17-month-old son, Brooks, wants to do is play baseball like his dad. Wright said Brooks just received a batting tee as a gift and that he might even be a lefty. His oldest daughter on the other hand, likes watching baseball, but does not want to play. He said dance, gymnastics, and basketball are her desires.

Wright also said he has a goal with his youngest daughter to start the first all-girls team for a little league he plans on her playing in.

Wright also said that he will not be able to attend Mets Old Timers’ Day or the Tom Seaver statue unveiling.  He said initially he planned to attend the statue unveiling, but with the date changes due to COVID, he is no longer able to attend because of schedule conflicts. “I don’t consider myself old,” joked Wright about the Old Timers’ day.
