SAN DIEGO – With 2:02 remaining in the third quarter, the SDCC women's basketball team was looking at a 19-point deficit.

The Hawks were able to chip away at that deficit to get it down to four points with 14 seconds left, but the Royals were able to hold on for the win. SDCC outscored Hope International 24-15 in the final frame.

Keren Hogue converted her and-1 attempt to trim the HIU lead to 14 points. Madison Beckham scored in back-to-back possessions for SDCC and hit two 3-pointers. Her second triple sparked an 11-0 run to bring the score within five at 58-53. Both teams exchanged baskets for the next two minutes. Hogue made one of her two free-throw attempts and HIU added two on the other end of the court to seal the deal and the 6-point win.

Maddison Zugna led the Hawks with 15 points. Hogue and Beckham were also in double figures. Hogue added 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting. She also added five rebounds, five steals, and five assists. Beckham notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.

Coach Shawn Chaffin remarked, "I am really proud of our team's effort tonight. To be able to battle one of the top teams in the conference to a two-possession game with our young squad speaks volumes about our growth."

SDCC will have one more week of regular season play before the conference tournament. They travel to Vanguard on Thursday before hosting Life Pacific on Saturday in the regular-season finale.
