Keith Hernandez Turns 68 Today

Happy birthday pretty boy!

The 1979 MVP, two-time World Series champ, 11-time gold glover, five-time all-star, author, cat dad, actor, broadcaster extraordinaire, turns 68 today.

One of the most iconic New York Mets of all time has been gracing us with his presence since being traded to Queens in 1983. Who doesn’t love reminiscing on the 1986 season, him being the first captain in team history, updates on his cat Hadji, screaming about good fundies, or his groaning during Mets blowouts? What about hearing how his commute from Sag Harbor was or how he spent his offseason?

A personality larger than life and at times a mustache with enough gold to fill up an entire coin gallery in Oyster Bay. How can you not celebrate Keith? I choose to do it by reminiscing on some of his finest broadcast moments and a few stories.

Remember when Keith broke the booth camera?

Or when Keith relayed his offseason plans?

What about when Keith wasn’t talking about the hot dog?

That time they let Keith introduce the Cardinals starting defense?

Keith actually lifting a finger?

Him entering Citi Field with someone holding an umbrella for him?

When the booth let him read the media guide?

Lastly, ever wonder what he buys for Hadji?

If you wanted to learn more about the Mets legend, his memoir “I’m Keith Hernandez” recounts his life up until 1979, three years before he joins the Mets. My recommendation is this Sports Illustrated story printed weeks before the 1986 World Series about Keith’s difficult relationship with his father.
