Marte had to be removed from Sunday’s game vs. the Giants, and an MRI on Monday revealed that he suffered a non-displaced fracture of his 12th rib. Marte will be placed on the 10-day IL, and his stay could ultimately be much longer than that. He will be re-evaluated in five-to-seven days, but a fractured rib typically takes about six weeks to heal on its own.

Marte was acquired by the Marlins last season, and he’s been fantastic to start the year. He’s posted a 151 wRC+, and his two home runs and three stolen bases were particularly helpful for fantasy owners. Magneuris Sierra and Jon Berti are the most likely options to replace him in center field, and they could also promote Lewis Brinson or Monte Harrison from the alternate training site.

The injury also makes it less likely that they will make another trip to the postseason. They were considered long shots to begin with — they’re listed at +3500 on FanDuel Sportsbook to win the NL East — and Marte is one of their best position players.
