[Men's Lacrosse] Comeback victory for SAU on Senior Day

0 1

It was a slow start for SAU on Senior Day. Down 5-0 early in the first quarter, the Bees responded and were able to come away with a 14-11 victory over (RV) Benedictine College Saturday afternoon in Davenport. St. Ambrose recognized seniors Gavin Flynn, Andrew Lis, Hunter Northway, and Matt Madril pregame. With the win, SAU moves to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the KCAC. The Ravens are now 6-2 overall and 6-1 in conference.

Benedictine came out strong, scoring the first five goals of the game with 7:07 remaining in the first quarter. Then the Bees came alive. Justin O'Marrah scored a man-up goal with an assist from Cole Danner to get the scoring started for St. Ambrose. O'Marrah added a second man-up goal just 13 seconds later with senior Madril credited with the assist. SAU would cut into the Ravens' lead with another man-up goal from Michael Shakerin. More penalties from Benedictine helped the Bees score two more man-up goals just 23 seconds apart to tie the game up at five heading into the second quarter.

The scoring would continue for the Bees in the second. Just over 30 seconds into the period, O'Marrah would strike again with Shakerin on the assist. Madril would find Makaile Shaddix with 8:59 left in the quarter to give the Bees a 7-5 lead. BC would get a goal back quickly after from Joseph Doyle to cut the lead to one. Shakerin would find the back of the net again with 5:01 to go, and Madril would get a goal of his own soon after. The Ravens would get a score with 4:03 left, and the Bees would head into halftime up 9-7.

St. Ambrose would get goals from Shakerin, Christian Dimaano, and Madril in the third period. Nolan Hayes and the SAU defense kept BC off the board in the quarter until five seconds left when Jack Kandoth found the back of the net to make the score 12-8 Bees. The teams would twice trade goals in the fourth, and the Ravens would score the final goal of the afternoon with 7:45 left. St. Ambrose locked it down from there to win 14-11.

Shakerin and O'Marrah scored four goals, and Shakerin added three assists. Danner also had three assists for the Bees.

Hayes made 15 saves in goal, and Hunter Northway won 17 of 28 faceoffs for the Bees. SAU outshot the Ravens by 15 and collected 15 more ground balls.

St. Ambrose will take on Missouri Valley next on April 3rd at 3 p.m. in Marshall, Mo.
