New York Mets prospect, Carlos Cortes continues to shine in the Australian Baseball League with the Sydney Blue Sox.

Cortes, who was hitting .345 entering game one against the Canberra Cavalry, continued to hit the ball wall, going two for three, with a monster home run, knocking in two run and scoring a run for the Blue Sox, who defeated the Canberra Cavalry 3-1 in game one of a two-game doubleheader tonight in Australia. Cortes’ two RBIs in game one gives him 10 RBI’s on the season heading into game two.

In game two, Cortes (23) continued to dominate at the plate for the Blue Sox. He went two for three, with a double, one walk, and one run scored. The Blue Sox went on to defeat the Cavalry 9-3 in game two for a two-game sweep. They improve their overall record to 4-6, with a .400 win percentage. They sit six games behind the first place Melbourne Aces.

Cortes, who played left field at the collegiate level, but has played majority second base at the professional level since being drafted by the Mets in 2018, was back in left field tonight during game one for the Blue Sox. He split game two between second base and right field.

Cortes, 5’7”, 197 lbs was drafted in 2018 primarily for his abilities from the left side of the plate. He finished his career at the South Carolina with 37 home runs and a .378 OBP. He has taken that strength and continued to show that at the minor league level for the Mets.

In his first full season with the Mets’ organization, Cortes was assigned to the Mets’ Florida State League affiliate St. Lucie Mets, where he continued to impress. He had a .255 average, .336 OBP, .397 SLG, and a .733 OPS in 2019, racking up 26 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs, and 68 RBI’s. He ranked second in the Florida State League with 182 total bases.

Cortes has continued to prove himself this offseason and show versatility in the field as well during the ABL. Cortes ended his day with a 1.093 OPS and 10 RBIs in 10 games on the season with the Sydney Blue Sox, who will resume action next weekend with games next Thursday through Sunday.
