Mets To Play Yankees On 20th Anniversary Of Terrorist Attacks

0 9

With the 2020 schedule recently being released, MLB is already planning ahead to the 2021 season, and is expected to announce the full 2021 schedule on Thursday.

MLB is planning to have the Mets play the Yankees at Citi Field on September 11, 2021, as that is the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

This will be the first time the Mets and Yankees will have played each other on that date, so it is surely going to be an emotional and powerful moment of unity for everyone involved.

The 2001 attacks were obviously a devastating and tragic time, so much so that both New York baseball teams (and all New York sports, for that matter) were temporarily put on halt to let everyone grieve and recover. Of course, the Mets returned to Shea Stadium on September 21 and Mike Piazza hit one of the most emotional home runs in baseball history.

While Pete Alonso handed out special cleats with commemorative 9/11 designs on them last year, MLB has still not approved the players to wear first responder hats, and it is not clear yet whether they will be allowed to do so by next year.

Nevertheless, it is still a good gesture for MLB to honor the innocent people who lost their lives that day and never forget what a terrible tragedy that day was, as well as how the strong people of New York came together to grieve and overcome it.
