[Indoor Track and Field] Hundley, Gustafson Nab KCAC Indoor Track Weekly Honor
WICHITA, Kan. – Friends University senior Shelby Hundley has been named the KCAC Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, while sophomore Cadin Gustafson has received the conference Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week award, the league announced today (Feb. 12).
For Hundley, this is already her third weekly honor in what is shaping up as a spectacular senior campaign.
Hundley hit three NAIA "A" standard marks this past weekend at the Gorilla Classic in Pittsburg, Kan.
The Bern, Kan. native finished a solid third in the 600 yard race with an NAIA "A" time of 1:25.75 and then helped the Falcon 4 X 400 and 4 X 800 relay teams each hit an "A" time. Both marks rank third in the program's all-time indoor rankings.
"Shelby proves week after week that she is one of the best middle distance runners in the country," Friends track & field head coach Cole Davis said.
"She is extremely deserving of this award after hitting three automatic national standards in the same weekend. I am excited to watch her compete the next few weeks at the conference and the national meet."
Gustafson, a Derby, Kan. native, finished 28th in the Long Jump (6.50m) at the Gorilla Classic before recording the ninth best mark in Falcon indoor history with a 13.37 m Triple Jump.
"Cadin is only a sophomore, but has emerged as a leader within our program this season," Davis said.
"He always has a team-first mentality and it has really shown as he has gone out of his comfort zone to learn the triple jump the last two weeks in order to prepare for the conference meet. It was great to see him hit another personal best in the event which has him ranked within the top three of the KCAC."
The Falcon indoor track squads are now gearing up to compete in the KCAC Championships, scheduled for this weekend (Feb. 15-16) on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo.
