[Women's Basketball] Women's Basketball Opens Season with Convincing Win over Saint Katherine

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Exactly one year ago, the SDC women's basketball team opened their season on the road at Saint Katherine as the Hawks won 77-40.

 

Fast forward to 2018, the Hawks matched their offensive output from 2017 with a 77-44 win against the Firebirds for the season-opening win.

 

Newcomers Colleen Murphy and Henriette Gahmig led the scoring for SDC. Murphy scored a game-high 14 points as Gahmig followed with 12. Erica McCarter added nine points off the bench.

 

Murphy scored the first points for the season for SDC, making two free throws. Leading 12-6 with four minutes left in the first quarter, the Hawks went on a 14-5 run to lead 26-11 after the first 10 minutes. McCarter hit a triple and a jumper to get SDC going in the second. Stacy Hock and Chyna Burris kept it going for the Hawks, extending their lead to 36-11 with eight minutes left in the half. SDC kept their sizeable lead in the second as Andrea Cavazos converted a free throw.

 

The Hawks' lead stayed above 25 for the rest of the game and led by as much as 35. SDC shot 41.7 percent from the floor and beyond the arc. They outrebounded the Firebirds 50-39 and forced 18 turnovers. Hannah Myers led the team with five steals.

 

SDC will have their home-opener on Saturday as they take on La Sierra at Grossmont College starting at 7:30 p.m.
