It's often been said defense wins championships and the Kansas Wesleyan women's soccer team has proven the adage to be correct again this fall.

The Coyotes won the Kansas Conference title with a 4-0 victory over Sterling on Tuesday – the ninth regular season conference crown in school history. The shutout was their fifth in a row and seventh in the last eight matches.

Coach Kat Benton's team ended conference play with an 11-0-1 record and is 14-2-2 overall, earning the Coyotes the No. 22 ranking in this week's NAIA poll.

They begin play in the KCAC tournament with a match against Avila (5-11-2) at 7 p.m. Friday at Graves Family Sports Complex. KWU defeated the Eagles 4-1 on Oct. 14, in Kansas City, Mo.
