Rays trade Brad Miller to the Milwaukee Brewers

Tampa found a taker for the recently designated for assignment Miller in the contending Brewers

The Rays are in an interesting spot right now. While they haven’t performed terribly this season, they find themselves in arguably the toughest division in baseball with the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees wreaking havoc against...well basically everyone.

The Rays have been beset by injuries and ineffectiveness at times this year and their response to that has been to bring up some young talent to bolster their ranks. Willy Adames has seen time recently with the club and they also just called up Jake Bauers to help muster some offense.

Unfortunately for Brad Miller, he was the roster casualty in the wake of Bauers’ promotion despite not playing badly for Tampa. Therefore, it is no surprise that the Rays found a taker for his services.

Miller debuted in 2013 and has had what can best be described as intermittent success in the majors during the course of his career with his 2016 season that saw him connect for 30 home runs and post a 111 wRC+ being the highlight. The veteran infielder has posted a .256/.322/.429 in 174 plate appearances in 2018.

The Rays sent Miller and cash to the Brewers in exchange for Ji-Man Choi who has mostly played first base and has bounced between the high minors and the major leagues over the last several seasons. Choi will start of his time with the Rays in the minor leagues and he has slashed .302/.436/.488 in the minors in 2018 while slashing .233/.281/.500 in 12 games with the Brewers this season.
