Lajoie-Start Southern New England Chapter summer meeting (Pawtucket, RI)

Join SABR's Southern New England Lajoie-Start Chapter for its summer meeting from 10:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. All baseball fans are welcome to attend.

Our session will begin at 10:30 a.m. under our usual picnic tent beyond the right-field bullpen. We will wrap things up at 3:00 p.m. At 6:15 p.m., the Pawtucket Red Sox will face the Indianapolis Indians, the Pittsburgh Pirates' Triple-A affiliate.

We'll have two guest speakers: Upton Bell and Doug Lyons.

Upton Bell has had a varied career, including a stretch as GM of the Patriots in their early days. To latter-day sports fans he's probably better known for his sports talk shows on a variety of radio stations.

Old friend Doug Lyons has visited us a couple of times before. When he's not practicing his lawyer's trade, he writes books on baseball (mostly). His latest is The New York Yankees Home Run Almanac, a day-by-day compendium of memorable Yankees home runs and hitters. He's currently working on a similar book about the Red Sox.

As usual, Pawtucket Red Sox manager Kevin Boles and maybe his coaches will stop over for a while. And we'll have our usual ballpark lunch.

The two speakers plus the Pawsox, the trivia quiz, and the baseball book raffle will take up a good chunk of our time, so we're probably limited in the number of research presentations we can accommodate. (We have one presenter signed up so far, and any others who want to get on the program will be subject to bumping to our November meeting if time runs short.)

A reminder: The Pawsox have fireworks after every Saturday game this season. They will be setting up in the parking area outside the tent at some point in the afternoon. To avoid a repeat of last June's confusion, DO NOT park right outside the tent. If you do, you'll have to move your car. Park in the big parking area beyond the right-field fence.
