[Softball] Lady Evangels Split with RSU

4.13.10 - Oklahoma City, Okla. - Freshman Tori Covarrubias made her first career home run count. The three-run bomb completed a five-run rally giving the Mid-America Christian University softball team the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth to claim a 5-4 victory over Sooner Athletic Conference opponent Rogers State University in the night cap after falling 4-0 in the opener at Jack Allen Field Tuesday.

Picher Caitlyn Ulmer finished off the Lady Hillcats in the top of the seventh, getting the win. The senior from Pottsboro, Texas tossed a complete game allowing four runs, three earned on nine hits with three strikeouts.

The Lady Hillcats dented the scoreboard quick in game two, scoring in the top of the first. RSU added to their lead in the second with a sacrifice fly by Logan Zamora to deep left field, plating Angelina Vines pinch running for Shelby Brogdon who led off the inning with a single.

RSU posted one run in the third and fourth frames to go ahead 4-0.

After a scoreless fifth the Lady Evangels got the offense going in the sixth frame. Senior Kelsey Gabriel led off the inning with a triple to deep left-center field. Ashley Newman reached on an infield error, allowing Gabriel to score. A single by Chelsea Downs put runners on first and second. Caitlyn Ulmer followed with a RBI single and reached second on the throw to home. With both runners in scoring position and one out Covarrubias hit a shot over the left field fence, giving the Lady Evangels the 5-4 advantage.

Taryn Hernandez is tagged with the loss in the circle giving up five runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.

In game one neither team could generate a run in the first three innings. RSU put their first run on the board in the fourth and posted one run in each of the following innings to get the 4-0 victory.

Jill Wilbanks takes the loss for MACU pitching a complete game, allowing four runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts. Taryn Hernandez gets the win, relieving Tye Coats in the second, pitching six innings allowing four hits with three strikeouts.

The Lady Evangels continue their homestand on Thursday, April 15th as they host Langston University in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
