ROBBY SAWYER TAKES IMCA MODIFIED VICTORY AT BAKERSFIELD SPEEDWAY
BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA (June 29, 2025) – Robby Sawyer won his third IMCA Modified feature of 2025 at the new Bakersfield Speedway at Kevin Harvick’s Kern Raceway, persevering over an opening lap melee to win the 30-lap main event.
Porterville’s Michael Scruggs jumped ahead of the 14-car field at the start for the 30-lap IMCA Modified feature. Scruggs then abruptly slowed and spun in turn four, gobbling up multiple cars for a large crash. Sawyer was able to drive through the carnage but clipped Scruggs for right side damage. Ricky Childress, Jr., Brad Watkins, and Bryan Clark were among the drivers unable to continue.
Sawyer drove around Austin Kiefer on the restart to take control of the 30-lap contest. Sawyer took the win by a commanding advantage while Kiefer held off Brad Pounds for second. Rob Sanders finished fourth. 2024 champion Gavyn Manning finished fifth.
Tyler Bannister of Bakersfield won the 25-lap IMCA Sport Modified feature after starting seventh. Bannister took over second from Matthew Frazier of Santa Maria on lap 13. Pismo Beach’s Landon King had accumulated a nearly three second advantage by that stage of the event. Bannister ran down the teenage Sport Mod rookie. Bannister nabbed the lead on the penultimate lap of the race for an exciting fourth win of the season. King finished second followed by Frazier, 2024 champion Jason Bannister, and Tyler Irwin.
Nicholas Johnson marched from ninth starting position into the lead by lap seven of the IMCA Stock Car feature, then never relinquished the point for his tenth win of the 2025 Bakersfield Speedway season across three classes. Roger Holder drove away from points leader Raymond Noland for second at the conclusion of 20 laps of action. Billy Simkins won a narrow battle with Justin Schweitzer for fourth as well.
Cody Johnson then held off Nicholas in the H&S Body Works Hobby Stocks 20-lap main event. Cody Johnson drove underneath Matt Wankun to lead lap nine in the decisive pass for the win. Nicholas Johnson finished second followed by Marcus Wankum, Matt Wankum, and Brooke Cimental.
Nick Velasquez of Camarillo became the fourth different So-Cal Dwarf Car winner at Bakersfield Speedway in four races. Velasquez on the 25-lap event by an unprecedented eight second margin. Daniel Peters finished second followed by Trent Morley, Dominic Maldonado, and Bakersfield’s JD Brown.
Kyle Wood won his second consecutive American Stocks main event, driving from tenth starting position to extend his points lead. Colby Ward of Bakersfield was poised to take the victory but a restart allowed Wood to challenge. Ward spun in turn two to bring out a caution on lap 16 while battling for the top spot. Wood took control and led the final four circuits for victory. Ricky Childress, Jr. finished second followed by Jamesie Goff, Sunnie Simkins, and Jon McKinley.
