NASCAR Team Member Fired For His Controversial Mexico Comments
NASCAR's completed its first-ever Mexico City race earlier this month, and not everybody enjoyed the experience.
Following the NASCAR Cup Mexico City on June 15, longtime spotter Tab Boyd expressed his disapproval of the trip in a since-deleted social media post.
"I'm ready to go home, screw this place, people can talk it up all they want...can't even walk out the front door of the hotel without getting hustled and money snatched...in less than 5 minutes. Good area my a--," Boyd wrote.
Boyd, who worked with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and the No. 47 Chevrolet, lost his job as a result of his remarks. Hyak Motorsports fired him last week, a decision that Stenhouse confirmed last Friday before the weekend race at Pocono.
"You know, obviously, that's an unfortunate deal. The team let Tab Boyd go this week, and we got Clayton Hughes to come fill in. I've never worked with Clayton," Stenhouse said. "You know, obviously, I think the concern for me is trying to get on the same page as quickly as we can knowing that, like you said, the schedule coming up, going to Atlanta next week could be a very important race for our team and trying to get us into the Playoffs and put us in the right position."
Stenhouse, who finished 27th at Mexico City, came in 30th in Sunday's The Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono. Meanwhile, Boyd is out of a job,
Boyd's dismissal comes at the same time that NASCAR driver Carson Hocevar faces punishment for his own unflattering comments about Mexico. On a live Twitch stream, Hocevar referred to Mexico as a "s------e," resulting in him being fined $50,000.
The money will reportedly go to Mexican charities, and the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year must also complete mandatory cultural-sensitivity and bias-awareness training.
