CLOSE FIGHT TO BECOME AUSTRALIA’S NEXT ELITE JUNIOR CHAMPION

The 2024 SP Tools Australian Kart Championship, presented by Castrol is heading into its final round of the year and the championship title fight is tight in the top Junior category – KA2.

Isaac McNeill and Lewis Cordato are set for a championship showdown at the final round to be hosted by the Oakleigh Go Kart Racing Club in Southeast Melbourne across the weekend of August 31/September 1.

“I’m feeling pretty good, I have a lot of confidence going into it,” says Cordato, who currently sits atop the points standings.

It is the first time a round of the Championship has been contested at the long-standing venue following a recent track extension and re-surface courtesy of a Victorian Government’s Community Motorsport Program Grant and interest-free loan from Karting Australia’s National Infrastructure Development Fund.

Both Cordato and McNeill know it’s going to be an eventful weekend filled with pressure and expectations on their young shoulders.

“It’s a technical track with a lot of elevation but it’s fun, similar to Coffs Harbour, it’s fast there,” said McNeill.

Both drivers have had an incredible year racing in the prestigious Australian Kart Championship where many greats have previously reigned success in wins and titles – none more so that recent Formula 1 Race Winner Oscar Piastri.

Cordato has been very consistent throughout the year, his strategic racing and ability to handle high-pressure situations have kept him in the championship lead as we approach the final round.

McNeill has proven his title fight is serious with impressive speed across numerous rounds – including victory at the most recent round in Coffs Harbour.

With his older brother winning the junior championship in 2021, should Cordato be successful in it title quest the pair will become the first pair of brothers to be victorious in Australia’s highest level of junior karting.

“It’ll mean a lot to me because we’ve been fighting for this for long, considering my brother won it, it’d be good to get another championship for the family,” added Cordato.

McNeill has his sights on ending his time as a junior kart racer on a high as he sets his sights on a career in motorsport.

“The win will mean a lot; it’s been lots of work and years of racing,” said McNeill.

The final round of the 2024 SP Tools Australian Kart Championship presented by Castrol kicks off on Thursday August 30 with the final races of the year to be contested on Sunday September 1.  The Champions will be crowned in a Gala Awards Dinner hosted by Greg Rust at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre that evening.

The Oakleigh Go-Kart Racing Club is located on Deals Road, Clayton.  Admission to the event for spectators is free.  All og the racing action will be streamed live across Saturday and Sunday of the event on www.watchmysportlive.tv
