ELMS Confirms Adoption Of New Barcelona Track Format
The opening round of the 2023 European Le Mans Series will take place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday 23 April with the circuit featuring a new layout
In a change from the previous three occasions that the championship has visited the Catalan circuit, the track layout used will be the new-for-2023 Grand Prix circuit, which misses out the final chicane, reduces the number of corners from 16 to 14 and the track length by 18m to 4.657km.
The chicane was introduced in 2007 before the final corner but with improvements to the safety infrastructure, including new TECPRO barriers at the last two right hand corners, the circuit has been returned to its original layout.
The Spanish track has also undergone other changes, with a widening of the run-off area in Turn 1, including 70 more metres of gravel plus a slope of 5%, and a new fence protecting Turns 1 and 2 to improve the safety of drivers.
The 4 Hours of Barcelona will take place on 21-23 April and is round 1 of the 2023 European Le Mans Series.
