Meyer Shank Racing Receive Heavy Penalties For Daytona Data Manipulation

0 16

Meyer Shank Racing have been heavily penalised but retain their 2023 Rolex 24 at Daytona win after IMSA this evening revealed that they had determined that the team had run below the threshold set by Michelin and furthermore had manipulated their minimum tyre pressure data during the IMSA season opener in January.

The race on January 28-29 saw Helio Castroneves, Simon Pagenaud, Colin Braun and Tom Blomqvist take victory, but whilst the win will stand, the team have been heavily punished for the infractions with particular impact on the Meyer Shank Racing team engineer Ryan McCarthy who is indefinitely suspended from the paddock with his IMSA credentials revoked.

In addition: Meyer Shank Racing will lose 200 team and driver IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship points and all team and driver IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup points.

All race prize money is also revoked with the team also levied a $50,000 fine.

Michael Shank himself has been placed on probation through to June 30, 2023.

The penalties applied see the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Acura now top the GTP standings with MSR falling to last place.

The IMSA decision comes over five weeks after the event and follows an intensive investigation after the matter was brought to IMSA by HPD.

The manipulation was achieved, IMSA discovered, by the team applying ‘offsets’ to the information being transmitted by the monitoring devices on each wheel that was being sent to, and observed by, IMSA.

The manipulation enabled the tyres to be run at a lower pressure than the minimum defined by Michelin allowing the #60 to heat up their tyres more quickly on a restart.

In a social media post following IMSA’s announcement this evening the Meyer Shank Racing team have accepted responsibility for the matter and have made it clear that Ryan McCarthy is no longer employed by them.
