Gulf 12 Hours Confirms 38 Car Entry
Gulf 12 Hours race organiser Andrea Ficarelli has confirmed a 38 car entry for the 2022 race on 11 December that now sees 32 GT3 cars joined by 6 Porsche Cup cars in what is also the final round of the 2022 Intercontinental GT Challenge.
The updated list is confirmed as final, or very near final, with the changes from the provisional 34 car GT3 entry seeing an additional AF Corse Ferrari (the MDK Racing car announced this week) and a GetSpeed Performance Mercedes AMG.
The latter car replaces a planned but now withdrawn Craft Bamboo AMG, the Hong Kong-based team opting to focus on Macau. Also withdrawn from the original list are a Greystone McLaren and the two, then unnamed WRT car, the Belgian squad opting to miss the event, principally due to a lack of available BMW M4 GT3s for the squad to fulfil a race programme alongside their European test programme.
The 38 car entry is understood to be a maximum grid to take into account both the refuelling capability of the Yas Marina pit lane and the available tyre supplies.
Ficarelli expects the GT3 entry to see “6-8 Pro entries” with the remainder of the GT3 grid broadly split 50:50 between Pro-Am and Am.
Driving Force Events have also added an event at Dubai Autodrome on the following Sunday (18 December), a 4 hour event that will welcome cars that have contested the Gulf 12 Hours, plus other GT3s, GT4s and one-make GT cars.
Ficarelli offered an opinion that a 20-24 car grid in Dubai was possible with several Gulf 12 Hour teams already expressing support for the concept. Tyre supply there too is understood to be a limiting factor
