OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY FAMILY MOURNS THE LOSS OF ITS MATRIARCH VERA STYRES

0 4

The Ohsweken Speedway family mourns the loss of its matriarch Vera Styres.

Vera was more than the mother of track owner and builder Glenn Styres. She was the calm, but strong influence that kept the fan side of the facility level.

Vera was often the first face our fans saw when they entered the facility, and she was the familiar warm glowing smile that people could count on during their Friday night Excitement. Vera was among the first inductees onto the Ohsweken Speedway Wall of Fame.

It is hard to express how much Vera meant to the operation of our Speedway, her steady and welcoming demeanour was unwavering. Whether a beautiful summer evening or a cold, rainy night Vera’s disposition didn’t change. She commanded respect, and had a way of infecting everyone with her quiet confidence.

Vera lived in front of the Speedway, and had many interests outside of racing. She was a champion and well-traveled bowler; she was a member of the Iroquois Red Hats; and she was a proud member of the ‘Mohawk’ baseball team.

She is survived by her children C. Michael, Lu Ann, Kathy (Pete), Curtis (Trish), Glenn (Chantelle), 19 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; sisters Wilma, Romaine, Norma and brother Jerry (Tracey). Also remembered by many nieces, nephews cousins, and friends. Predeceased by husband Carl, baby girl Angelle-Louise, sisters Iowne and Sarah Ann, brothers John, Hiram, Frankie and Raymond. Parents Walter and Freda Mt.Pleasant (Henhawk).

Ohsweken Speedway won’t be the same without Vera Styres, but her impact and her presence will never leave.
