Jordan Anthony captures World Indoor Championships 60m title
TORUŃ, POLAND – Arkansas alum Jordan Anthony registered a world-leading time of 6.41 seconds to claim 60m gold at the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships on Friday, as his time ranks equal No. 4 on the all-time world list.
In his first international meet, Anthony defeated the defending world champion in British sprinter Jeremiah Azu, who placed fourth in 6.48, as well as the 2014 winner in American Trayvon Bromell, the bronze medalist in 6.45 after setting the world-leading time of 6.42 in the semifinal.
Runner-up to Anthony in a career best of 6.45 was Kishane Thompson of Jamaica.
“Winning the gold feels great but, to be honest, I feel more excited for the fans than for myself,” noted Anthony. “I’m happy to sign autographs and just hang out a bit with them. Before the semi-final, I talked to Trayvon Bromell’s coach Antonio. I said to him that Trayvon will set the pace in his race and I will follow him.
“When I saw he ran 6.42 I was like, ‘ok, right, now I need to run faster’. The final was a great race but I still have a lot left in the tank. Most importantly, I did my debut right and I’m bringing the gold medal back to the USA.”
Running three rounds of the 60m in the same day, Anthony opened with a 6.54 prelim win, and then won his semifinal over Azu in 6.43 to match his previous career best.
Anthony claimed the 11th 60m title by an American since the World Indoor Championships started in 1985. Double winners have included Justin Gatlin (2003, 2012) and Christian Coleman (2018, 2024).
Other Americans with a 60m title at World Indoors include Lee McRae (1987), Andre Cason (1991), Maurice Greene (1999), Tim Harden (2001), and Lenord Scott (2006).
The 6.41 by Anthony equals the second fastest winning time in the history of the event, trailing a 6.37 by Coleman in 2018 and equaling 6.41s by Italy’s Lamont Marcell Jacobs in the 2022 and Coleman in 2024.
“I used to play college football and I performed in front of a lot more people but coming out here today made me a bit more excited,” said Anthony. “This felt easy for me. This proves to me I picked the right sport. I am looking forward to the outdoor season.”
Bromell stated: “Looking at Jordan (Anthony), I see a mirror image of myself from 10 years ago. I also won the world title as a young, unpolished athlete. You do not see too many talents like him. It is athletes like him that keep me motivated and on top of my game. I know he has a great team and I expect him to have a great career ahead of him.”
