Higginbottom Scores 33 Points in Arkansas’ Win Over Texas A&M

FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas women’s basketball (9-14, 2-6 SEC) picked up its second win in conference play and defeated Texas A&M (10-10, 3-5 SEC), 72-51, in Bud Walton Arena.

Guard Izzy Higginbottom led all scorers with 33 points, her third SEC game with at least 30 points, to help snap the Hogs’ four game losing streak. The Batesville, Arkansas native leads the NCAA with 12 25-plus point games this season. She also moved up to No. 9 on the program’s single-season scoring list with 543 points.

How it Happened

Higginbottom scored the game’s first points and Arkansas never trailed for the remaining 38:04. The home team opened with a 7-2 lead and fired off a 6-0 scoring run before closing out the first quarter on an 8-0 run. The Razorbacks finished 5 of their last 7 from the field to take a 21-14 lead into the second. Higginbottom, Vera Ojenuwa and Jenna Lawrence combined for three 3-pointers.

Higginbottom and Lawrence pushed Arkansas’ lead to 10 points by halftime and combined for 18 points in the second quarter. Lawrence came alive with back-to-back threes. The Hogs led by as many as 14 points before Texas A&M finished 4-4 from the field to close out the half.

The Razorbacks’ defense held the Aggies to just 15 points in the second half, the fewest points given up in a half in the eight SEC games Arkansas has played so far. Both teams ran cold with multiple droughts and the Aggies finished just 1 for their last 8 from field goal range in the final four minutes of the third quarter.

Both teams also combined for eight points in the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter but the Hogs prevailed, 11-6, to take all four periods.

Arkansas finished 25-52 (48.1%) from the field for its best shooting game in league play. The Hogs also outrebounded A&M, 41-37, to win the boards for the first time in SEC play.

Higginbottom came close to becoming the program’s second player to record a triple-double, finishing with 33 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Lawrence was the Hogs’ only other player in double figures and came close to a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
