Sensory Playground, designed for kids with diverse needs, at Lake City and Burien

0 2

For some children, our regular Indoor Playgrounds may be a bit overwhelming – too busy, loud, or bright. And so, after being on hiatus, we are very happy and proud to announce that Sensory Playgrounds are back at SGA Lake City, and expanded to SGA Burien!

Our Sensory Playground sessions are designed for children with special educational needs and disabilities to access gymnastics in their own way and at their favored speed! Children with autism, down syndrome, ADHD, cerebral palsy or any other moderate to severe exceptionality who would benefit from a quieter atmosphere, fewer sensory distractions and extra gym adaptations are welcome to attend.

Just like Indoor Playground, Sensory Playground is a single-serving event (register / attend only the events you want to come to!) in an open-gym style. Participants can play in their own way, at their own pace (following our safety rules, of course) on all our fun equipment; including soft foam pits, squishy mats, bouncy trampolines, low balance beams, a big springy floor, bars for hanging, and so much more!

We believe strongly that Sensory Playground is a valuable asset for a community to be able to access an environment and equipment that may not be typically accessible. We know how far a bit of physical activity and holistic movement goes for benefitting overall wellbeing, added to a controlled social setting where kids can just be themselves and have fun. We hope to play a small part in helping to provide that opportunity in a comfortable setting for all kids.

Perhaps your child does not require access to Sensory Playground, but if you know anyone / groups that could benefit, we’d be extremely grateful for your help in spreading the word for us to reach them.

Upcoming events:

Lake City 28th: Saturday, April 13, 12:30-1:30 PM

Burien: Sunday, April 14, 12:45-1:45pm

We will be offering Sensory Playgrounds on a bi-weekly basis at both Lake City (Saturdays) and Burien (Sundays). Pre-registration is required (single event).

Cost: $10 per child (Adult / caregiver participation is required to help ensure safe participation, and are free)

Ages: 6-17Y (If you have a child outside of this range, please call us to discuss)

  • Adult / caregiver participation is required to help ensure safe participation.
  • Pre-registration is required to ensure SGA is able to provide safe and high-quality experience for all. Pre-register for any individual event you wish to attend!
  • Before first attendance, student must have development specific conditions documented in their MY SGA account to attend, and an online parent-signed waiver needs to be completed. Upon enrollment, a Member Services Coordinator will reach out to you to gather some brief information about your child, so we can ensure they have a successful experience at the gym!
