Three Prepped for NW Arkansas Championship Qualifier

Three student-athletes from the University of Arkansas women’s golf team will represent the Razorbacks in the Monday qualifier of the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G. Miriam Ayora. Julia Gregg and Ffion Tynan will play tomorrow for a chance to move on to the weekend tournament. Not many collegiate golfers have an opportunity to compete in an LPGA tournament in their backyard like Arkansas does.

This is the fourth year Arkansas will have three invitations to the championship qualifier. Monday’s action will tee off as early as 1 p.m. for 18 holes of stroke play. The top two finishers will advance.

Ayora is playing in her first qualifier at the NW Arkansas Championship. The junior led the Razorbacks at the Carmel Cup with a 13th place finish after carding a 222 (72-74-74). Ayora is coming off last season having played 31 rounds in all 11 events, which included two top-10 finishes. The Spaniard achieved a career low 212 (67-74-71) at the Ally at Old Waverly and tied for ninth at the Blessings Collegiate last October.

Gregg is one of the most veteran golfers on the team, as she is in her senior season and playing in the qualifier for the second straight year. The Farmers Branches, Texas native was one of two Hogs to appear in all 33 rounds last season and ended the year second on the team in scoring average (73.94) and rounds at par or better (11). She registered a career-low 210 (72-70-68) at last year’s Cougar Classic, which earned her a career-best sixth place showing.

Tynan is coming off her freshman season having appeared in six tournaments. The Wales native tallied three rounds at par or better, including a low of 70 at the Moon Golf Invitational. Tynan had a successful summer of amateur golf, winning the Welsh Women’s Amateur Championship and being one of three representatives for Team Wales at the World Amateur Team Championship where she finished in 64th.

Kajal Mistry, who qualified into the weekend in 2021, has received a sponsor’s exemption this year. Mistry is coming off being tabbed a Golfweek All-American Honorable Mention and All-SEC First Team choice. The South Africa product led the team in scoring average (73.18) and par or better rounds (14) and earned her first individual medalist win at the MountainView Collegiate with a career-low 206 (68-67-71). She represented South Africa at the WATC, finishing in 28th.

Mistry, and potentially more pending Monday’s qualifier, will join five former Razorbacks currently on the LPGA tour, including Maria Fassi (2015-19), Stacy Lewis (2004-08), Gaby Lopez (2012-16), Brooke Matthews (2017-21) and Alana Uriell (2014-18).

The NW Arkansas Championship is in its 15th year, kicking off tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 19, and running into Sunday, Sept. 25 at the Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers. Official tournament play is from Sept. 23-25. More information on the LPGA event can be found here.
