HAT Safety Pack: Make the Smart Call Off-Piste (Accident Prevention & Companion Rescue Cards)

0 54

Research shows that, all too often, avalanche accidents happen because people weren’t applying key safety points even if they had education and training . This is where our HAT Safety Pack comes in.

Have you ever attended a talk or training which contained some great info, then realised later that you can’t quite remember the key points, or you’re not fully confident putting them into practice?

Training is essential, but on its own is not enough if you want to make things acceptably safe off-piste and skiing touring. In order to reduce risk to an acceptable level, you need to apply the key accident reduction points all the time. The ‘HAT Safety Pack’ can help you do that.

Each ‘HAT Safety Pack’ includes 2 deceptively simple size A7 cards protected in a plastic wallet :

  • 1 x Prevention Card with a ‘quick reference’ of the key accident reduction points. It contains a score card scale to help you reference the potential danger for a given slope on a given day, and more info like definitions of the danger scale. Watch the Pocket Prevention Guide Video  for a step-by-step explanation of how to use it.

The HAT Safety Pack is the perfect companion to any talk or training session (not just ours). If you’re heading off-piste, it’s invaluable : a simple memory aid that helps you apply the key safety principles consistently – reducing the likelihood of an accident, and improving your chances of a better outcome if one does happen.

As a former F-16 pilot and United Airlines pilot, I strongly believe in an accident reduction approach like Henry’s – that uses simple memory aids, takes into account basic human factors and encourages teamwork –  for people who are going off piste and ski touring. This type of disciplined approach has saved numerous lives in the world of aviation and healthcare and will continue to help make skiers and winter sport adventures safer in their activities.

The 2 cards in the HAT Safety Pack are :

Accident Prevention Card

An aid to help you to apply those points that can help you to be acceptably safe and a ‘weapon’, to help you fight human factor distractions which lead us to ignore basic safety points and are the origin of most accidents.

Companion Rescue Card

To remind you of the most important steps you should follow, in the event of an accident so you can dig your friends out, or they can get you out from under the snow in 15 minutes or less. (Most buried victims may survive for around 15 minutes; after 30 minutes, survival becomes far less likely.)

The HAT Safety Pack is a complement for all training and for all levels of off-piste skier/boarder:

  • For beginners: a clear starting point and simple framework to follow.
  • For the experienced: a structure for gaining and applying further knowledge
  • For pros: a fast, effective accident-prevention tool for client briefings and quick refreshers, plus a handy way to show that the key safety points have been covered.

Check out my short explanatory videos on how to use both cards below:
