Off Piste Snow Report – N French Alps – Week starting 5 January 2025

0 15

Snow at higher altitudes this coming week

Snowstorms, along with intermittent bright spells. This is great news for the higher resorts, but the rain/snow limit will vary from day to day.  It’s possible that lower lying resorts could see quite a bit of rain.

Clear skies over the past week or so have helped to create weak layers in the snowpack which all this fresh snow will be coming down upon. This is a very serious issue and will certainly come into play at some point soon with the new snow forecast this coming week.

Persistent weak layers, like we currently have on many slopes (mainly on North’ish facing and shaded ones) are at the root of almost all serious avalanche accidents in the Alps. So anyone who is heading for steep slopes with fresh snow needs to think seriously beforehand i.e. APPLY key safety points that are outlined in our Framework.

Avalanche danger warnings for the N French Alps, Sat 4th Jan c/o Meteo France

The snowpack is very unstable in a lot of places.
That’s why Météo France on Friday 3rd Jan, after 30 cm of fresh snowfall overnight, put the danger level up to 4 ‘High’ above 1900m. I think that was a valid call on their part considering the very weak layer(s) of facets under the new snow that built up mainly over the last ten days of clear skis and thin snowpack.
Even though it turned out that, in reality, the danger level fit more into the definition of a 3 ‘Considerable’, it was in the higher end of that category.
So it will be a few ‘low hanging fruit’ days for me – avoiding steep slopes.

Weather forecast : Sat 4th to  Thurs 9th Jan

A very changeable week ahead, with much needed snowfall throughout the week.
