Will my ski travel insurance policy pay out for off piste accidents

0 15

The worst happens

The worst happens, you have an accident off piste and you need a rescue. The nagging question is will the insurer pay out your claim for the rescue and the medical bills. Many insurers mention they have off piste cover. But they are not all the same. How do you know you have the right insurer? Any insurer will be looking at their policy wording to see if you complied. they will be looking to see that you took reasonable risks and reasonable precautions. They will be looking to identify a responsible person and find out what training or qualifications they have and what decisions were made. Some insurers understand the risks involved in off piste and some are somewhat hazy about it and will therefore default to refusing a claim if they can.

Understand the principles of insurance

One overarching principle is that you must always act as if you are not insured. You must not do anything that others or the resort might deem to be reckless. If the insurer suspects you took greater risks because you were insured they may deny the claim. Insurance is there to cover accidents and illness or things that happen beyond your control that result in costs or inconvenience or ill health. Here are three examples of how you might be considered reckless. But these are just three examples, there are many other circumstances where this principle applies.

Opportunities to get HAT training this Autumn

We are running three types of training events across the UK in November and December

Essentils talk off piste skiing

The Essentials Talk

A must see talk, full of ‘essential’ information for all off-piste skiers, no matter how experienced you are.

It is crucial that you attend an Essentials talk before going to the In depth talk

Off piste ski tourers In depth talk

In-depth Talk

For those who have seen an Essentials Talk at least once and have experience of off-piste skiing. These talks are an in-depth look at specific subjects: Henry will explore how and why avalanches are triggered and then go in-depth into how to make decisions and reduce risks.

Avalanche Transceiver Training

A practical session in the UK where you learn how to use a transceiver, shovel and probe to locate a victim in 5 minutes and dig them out in 15 minutes
This will be face to face, live and outdoors. We will be in Wimbledon, Sandbanks Poole, and Manchester.

The theme is about applying what you know

A particular focus for 2022 will be to show how off-piste skiing and ski touring can be surprisingly safe when ‘the essentials’ are applied. However, it can be surprisingly dangerous if that knowledge is not applied.

Everyone who attends a training session will receive an ACCIDENT REDUCTION card. It is increasingly clear that the vast majority of accidents are caused by individuals not applying decision making and risk reduction measures; and this is because of human factors and flaws that are magnified within a mountain environment.

The ACCIDENT REDUCTION card is tool you can use to make sure you can control these human factors and flaws and avoid an accident.
