NBC will show Alpine skiing and freeski halfpipe Wednesday night

0

Previously delayed skiing events will finally get underway on Wednesday in primetime.

The ski slopes of Pyeongchang will be busy on Wednesday night; the men’s alpine skiing slalom event and the men’s freeski halfpipe take the spotlight during NBC’s Feb. 21 primetime 2018 Winter Olympics lineup (live stream).

With some of the earlier issues with wind and weather, it seems like the skiing events are back on track and are finally ready to produce some high-flying action for Team USA. The men’s freeski halfpipe has a chance for an American sweep of the medal podium, with all four competitors making it to the finals with a top-12 score.

Three Americans sit at the top of the leaderboard following the qualifying round, with Aaron Blunck taking first place (94.40), Alex Ferreira in second (92.60) and Torin Yater-Wallace in third (89.60). Teammate David Wise fell on his first run, but finished in eighth place overall, good enough for all four Americans to claim a spot in the finals.

“The conditions out here are amazing, the halfpipe is perfect, and everybody is skiing at their highest level,” Wise said, according to NBC. “We’re going to see some really great skiing through the halfpipe in the final. I’m stoked to be a part of it.”

Bookending the halfpipe event, are the men’s alpine skiing slalom runs 1 and 2. Team USA will be represented by three skiers: David Chodounsky, Mark Engel, and Nolan Kasper. (Surprisingly, there is no overlap between competitors for the United States in men’s slalom and men’s giant slalom.)

Engel is the only newbie of the three, with Chodounsky having competed in Sochi in 2014, and Kasper competing in both 2010 and 2014. Heading into his third Winter Games, Kasper finished No. 24 in his debut in 2010 and No. 13 (the top U.S. finisher) in 2014. If he keeps improving at that pace, it stands to reason he could end up with a spot on the medal podium come night’s end.

You can find live streaming of all events at NBC’s Olympics site.
