Vonn seeks downhill gold in action-packed day at Games

Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - US ski star Lindsey Vonn will be out for a gold medal in the women‘s downhill in alpine skiing in one of the highlights of a busy day 12 of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang on Wednesday.Vonn missed out on the medals in the super-g, but is seeking her second gold in downhill after winning in Vancouver eight years ago.It is one of seven gold medals up for grabs on another clear and sunny day at the Games.The Norwegians, topping the medals table, can add more glory when cross country ski great Marit Bjoergen goes for a Winter Olympic record eighth gold in the team sprint.Germany will also be looking to increase their medals haul in the women‘s bobsleigh where Mariama Jamanka and Lisa-Marie Buckwitz were overnight leaders.Speed skating sees the men‘s and women‘s team pursuits, while the men‘s team sprint in cross country and and the men‘s ski cross in freestyle skiing complete the medals events.The women‘s figure skating event starts with the short programme, before the free skating on Friday. Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) have three teenagers among the contenders, led by two-time world champion Evgenia Medvedeva.Among the action elsewhere, Finland and OAR compete in the bronze medal game in women‘s ice-hockey, the men‘s ice-hockey competition is at the quarter-final stage, the men‘s big air heats were underway in snowboarding, and the men‘s and women‘s curling round-robin games were at a decisive stage.
