Austria's Mayer set for super-g gold to add to Sochi downhill win
Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - Austria‘s Matthias Mayer was heading for Olympic gold in the men‘s super-g in alpine skiing on Friday, to add to his downhill triumph in Sochi four years.Mayer led after the top 30 racers in the 62-strong field at the Jeongseon course, with Switzerland‘s downhill bronze medallist Beat Feuz second and 2014 winner Kjetil Jansrud of Norway third. The victory would end a series of four successive wins in the discipline at the Winter Olympics by Norway, who had also won five of the previous eight men‘s super-g races at the Games.Mayer is set to follow in the footsteps of countryman Hermann Maier, who was the last non-Norwegian to win the Olympic super-g, in Nagano in 1998. He would be set to emulate Thursday‘s downhill winner Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway in winning gold medals in both speed events.
