Seven golds to be won after wind puts paid to women's giant slalam

Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - Seven gold medals were up for grabs at the Winter Olympics on Monday after the women‘s giant slalom in alpine skiing fell victim to blustery winds on an otherwise cold and clear day in Pyeongchang. The race at Yongpyong alpine centre was rescheduled to Thursday, when a postponed men‘s downhill will also be held at the Jeongseon venue.Unfavourable wind conditions also led to a delayed start for the women‘s snowboard slopestyle final.Biathlon men‘s and women‘s pursuit races give German sprint winners Arnd Peiffer and Laura Dahlmeier a chance for their second gold medals of the Games.Canada were leading the team event going into the final session as figure skating‘s first medals were to be won, while the women‘s 1,500m speed skating, women‘s ski-jumping on the normal hill and men‘s moguls in freestyle skiing make up the medals event programme. The unified Korean women‘s ice-hockey team was also back in action with a preliminary round game against Sweden. It remained to be seen how wind conditions would affect the day‘s competition and training schedule on a day in which temperatures were around minus 10 degrees Celsius mid-morning at the Alpensia Olympic park, with a wind chill factor of around minus 20.
