Vonn sets the pace again at alpine skiing in Cortina

American alpine skiing star Lindsey Vonn again set the pace dominating for the second day of downhill training ahead of the women's World Cup at Cortina d'Ampezzo on Thursday.

Vonn -- the 2010 Olympic downhill gold medallist -- clocked 1min 36.87sec, over a second faster than her leading time on Wednesday down the Olympia delle Tofane course in the Italian Dolomites.

Liechtenstein's Tina Weirather was second fastest at 0.96sec with American Jacqueline Willes posting the third fastest time at 1.25sec.

Italy's Sofia Goggia, who lead an Italian sweep in Bad Kleinkirchheim, Austria last week, was fourth and American Mikaela Shiffrin fifth fastest a full 1.76sec off the pace.

Last year's downhill winner Lara Gut of Switzerland was seventh fastest.

The 33-year-old Vonn has achieved 11 of her 78 World Cup wins in the Italian resort, most recently the downhill and Super G in 2016.

With the Winter Olympics looming Vonn is chasing her first downhill win this season with her one World Cup success in the Super-G at Val d'Isere, France.

The 22-year-old Shiffrin, who has won nine of her last 10 races, including five in succession in the World Cup, has been in sensational form ahead of the Pyeongchang Games.

Two downhills -- including one replacing the cancelled Val d'Isere leg in the French Alps -- are scheduled on the slopes in the Italian Dolomites on Friday and Saturday with the Super-G on Sunday.
