Justin Gaethje was almost knocked out by one-handed fighter in his first world title defense
Justin Gaethje faced a highly unique opponent during his inaugural world title defense.
Gaethje is currently set to headline a major UFC event on January 24, competing against Paddy Pimblett for the interim lightweight title at UFC 324.
This upcoming bout marks the second time `The Highlight` has vied for the UFC interim lightweight strap, following his iconic clash with Tony Ferguson in 2020.
While he has yet to secure the undisputed 155 lb title in the UFC, Gaethje previously held a world championship in a rival organization.
Gaethje`s First Title Defense: Facing a One-Handed Challenger
Prior to joining the UFC in 2017, ‘The Highlight’ competed in the World Series of Fighting (WSOF), currently known as the PFL.
In 2014, after earning consecutive victories, Gaethje fought Richard Patishnock for the inaugural WSOF lightweight championship. Following a first-round knockout victory to claim the title, Gaethje was scheduled for his first defense against one of MMA`s most distinctive athletes: Nick Newell.
Known as ‘Notorious’ Newell, he gained notoriety in combat sports because he was born with only one hand—a seemingly massive handicap in mixed martial arts. Despite this physical challenge, Newell proved himself to be one of the top 155 lb fighters globally, earning a shot at the WSOF title.
Newell entered the contest undefeated, having finished all but one of his prior opponents, a record Gaethje certainly respected. And in the opening round, the challenger landed significant strikes, connecting squarely with Gaethje’s chin and seemingly rocking him on multiple occasions.
However, in typical `Highlight` fashion, Gaethje absorbed the damage, weathering the onslaught and taking control toward the end of the round with his relentless forward pressure and explosive style. The brutal pressure continued into the second frame, culminating in Gaethje landing a massive right hand that led to the referee stoppage.
Nick Newell’s Career Trajectory After the Gaethje Fight
Following his gutsy performance, Newell once again earned widespread acclaim from the combat sports community for his heart and tenacity.
After the defeat to Gaethje, ‘Notorious’ Newell successfully rebounded with three consecutive victories, including one under the LFA banner. This streak earned Newell an opportunity to secure a UFC contract when he participated in Dana White’s Contender Series in 2018.
Unfortunately, Newell lost the DWCS bout via unanimous decision. He later signed with Bellator, but following a loss in 2021, he announced his retirement from active competition.
