COLLEGE SOFTBALL Christopher Newport, ranked 10th in Division III, began its season with a 6-3 victory at Methodist in Game 1 of a doubleheader in Fayetteville, North Carolina, then hammered the Monarchs 14-2 in Game 2 Saturday. In Game 1, Natalie Quinlan and Kimberly Jones socked first-inning homers, and Caroline Alger pitched 4 2/3 hitless innings of relief for the victory.
