Lewis-Skelly, White poor: Ratings of Arsenal players against Southampton

0 2

Arsenal have been eliminated from the FA Cup after a shock 2-1 defeat to Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.

Scottish striker Ross Stewart put the Championship side ahead in the first half.

Viktor Gyökeres restored parity for the Gunners after coming off the bench in the second half.

However, with five minutes remaining, Shea Charles struck the decisive goal for the hosts, beating Kepa Arrizabalaga with a low effort into the bottom corner.

We present the ratings of the Arsenal players’ performances against Southampton.

Kepa Arrizabalaga 4.5/10

Kepa Arrizabalaga was once again trusted with a starting role by Mikel Arteta, despite his errors in the Carabao Cup final before the international break.

The Spanish goalkeeper delivered a solid performance against Southampton and was powerless to prevent both goals.

Ben White – 3/10

The England international was once again named in the starting lineup for the Gunners, stepping in for the injured Jurriën Timber.

The former Brighton defender endured a difficult outing against the Championship side and was fortunate to escape a red card after a reckless challenge in the second half.

Cristhian Mosquera – 4/10

Cristhian Mosquera had a mixed outing defensively, struggling to maintain consistency despite some decent moments.

The Spanish defender was frequently caught out of position, a lapse that Southampton exploited to score the winning goal with five minutes remaining in the match.

Gabriel Magalhães – 5/10

The former Lille defender delivered a solid performance at the back before being withdrawn in the second half.

Gabriel Magalhães, who had little to contend with for large spells, remained alert to every threat from the Saints both in the air and on the ground.

However, he was substituted for William Saliba after picking up an injury in the second half.

The development will be a major concern for Mikel Arteta ahead of the UEFA Champions League clash against Sporting Lisbon.

Myles Lewis-Skelly – 3/10

Lewis-Skelly was given a rare opportunity to start for the Gunners after on-loan Bayer Leverkusen defender Pierre Hincapié picked up an injury during the international break.

However, the England international struggled to influence the game and was eventually substituted for Riccardo Calafiori.

Christian Nørgaard – 4.5/10

Christian Nørgaard delivered an average performance in midfield for the Gunners, offering limited influence on proceedings.

The Danish midfielder struggled to impose himself on the game, finding it difficult to dictate play or provide the kind of control expected in the middle of the park.

Although he worked hard and contributed defensively in patches, his overall impact fell short as Arsenal looked for more creativity and authority in midfield.

Kai Havertz – 6/10

Kai Havertz put in a decent shift for the Gunners against Southampton. He was relatively quiet for much of the game but delivered when it mattered most in the second half.

The former Chelsea star made his mark by setting up Viktor Gyökeres to restore parity for Arsenal.

Martin Ødegaard – 5.5/10

The Gunners captain offered glimpses of his quality on his return from injury at St Mary’s Stadium.

Martin Ødegaard was heavily involved in the first half, helping the Gunners dominate possession and carve out chances for the forwards.

However, he was withdrawn in the second half, with Noni Madueke coming on to take his place.

Gabriel Martinelli – 5/10

Gabriel Martinelli posed a constant threat for the Gunners for much of the game, using his pace, skill, and direct approach to trouble the opposition.

However, the Brazilian winger missed a late chance to equalize in stoppage time, as his effort from the edge of the box was kept out by goalkeeper Daniel Peretz.

Gabriel Jesus – 4.5/10

The Brazilian forward found it difficult to trouble the opposition defence in the first half, allowing the Saints to remain largely untested at the back against the Gunners.

Gabriel Jesus, who is steadily working his way back to top form after a lengthy injury spell, struggled to match the strength and physical presence of the centre-backs.

However, Mikel Arteta turned to Viktor Gyökeres in the second half, a move that injected fresh energy into the Gunners’ attack.

Max Dowman – 6/10

The young forward was rewarded with a rare start after his impressive performances for both club and country in recent weeks.

Dowman carried that form into the game, remaining lively on the right flank and constantly looking to create chances.

Despite his efforts, the Gunners were unable to secure victory and bowed out of the FA Cup.

SUBSTITUTE

Viktor Gyokeres 7/10

Viktor Gyökeres was introduced in the second half as Arsenal struggled to break down the Saints’ defence.

Fresh from an impressive international break, the Swedish striker added greater sharpness and energy to the Gunners’ attack.

The former Sporting Lisbon forward then finished clinically from close range, converting a precise pass from Kai Havertz to bring Arsenal level.

Martin Zubimendi – NA

Zubimendi was introduced in the final eleven minutes of the contest, coming on in place of Kai Havertz.

However, the former Real Sociedad midfielder struggled to assert his presence or help Arsenal control possession in the closing stages.

William Saliba – 4/10

Saliba was brought on in the second half, replacing Gabriel Magalhães after a possible injury.

Despite his introduction, he was unable to steady the defence, as Southampton found a late winner to secure the result.

Noni Madueke – 4/10

The former Chelsea winger returned to action despite concerns over a possible injury during the international break.

Coming on in place of Martin Ødegaard, Madueke failed to make a meaningful impact on the game.

Riccardo Calafiori – 4.5/10

Calafiori replaced the ineffective Lewis-Skelly in the second half and helped provide more stability on the left side of defence, allowing Arsenal to push forward and level the score.

He also attempted to grab a late winner, but his long-range effort went well off target.
