Ben White ends three-year England exile with shock Thomas Tuchel recall
Arsenal defender Ben White has been recalled to the England squad for the first time since the 2022 World Cup.
The right-back has been drafted into the squad by Thomas Tuchel after Jarell Quansah withdrew through injury.
Quansah suffered a left thigh muscle problem, creating a late opening in the squad ahead of England’s upcoming international fixtures.
White’s return ends a long absence from the national team setup.
The defender last represented England during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
He departed the squad during the tournament for personal reasons following England’s group-stage victory over Wales.
White had previously earned four caps under former manager Gareth Southgate.
His international absence continued after Southgate later revealed that the player had asked not to be considered for selection at the time.
That decision ruled White out of contention for the 2024 European Championship.
However, Tuchel confirmed last year that he had spoken directly with the Arsenal defender about returning to the national side.
The England manager indicated that White was open to rejoining the squad when the opportunity arose.
That opportunity has now arrived following Quansah’s withdrawal.
The call-up comes during a period of transition at right-back for England.
Both Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier have stepped away from international football.
Reece James is currently unavailable through injury, while Trent Alexander-Arnold was not included in the original squad selection.
White will therefore compete for minutes alongside Djed Spence and Tino Livramento.
England face Uruguay national football team and Japan national football team in upcoming friendlies at Wembley Stadium.
The matches form part of England’s preparations ahead of the World Cup later this year.
For White, the recall represents a significant moment after a challenging period disrupted by injuries.
The 28-year-old has made 21 appearances for Arsenal this season.
Several minor fitness setbacks over the past 18 months have limited his playing time.
Despite those interruptions, White has continued to provide valuable depth for Mikel Arteta’s squad.
His overlapping runs and attacking support from right-back have added an extra dimension to Arsenal’s build-up play.
His established chemistry with players such as Bukayo Saka could also prove useful in the England setup.
White’s most recent start came in the EFL Cup final, marking only his second start in a month following another minor knock earlier in the campaign.
Managing his fitness will remain important during the international break.
Nevertheless, the recall offers White the chance to re-establish himself on the international stage after more than three years away from England duty.
