5 tactical mistakes Arteta made that cost Arsenal EFL title

0 2

Premier League leaders Arsenal suffered their first major setback of the season after a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

Nico O’Reilly struck twice within four minutes early in the second half, securing the Carabao Cup for City at Wembley Stadium.

The loss effectively ended Arsenal’s hopes of a quadruple this season, with several tactical decisions by manager Mikel Arteta coming under scrutiny.

In this article, we examine five key choices by Arteta that may have cost the Gunners the title.

Wrong Lineup

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made several questionable lineup decisions in Sunday’s clash against Manchester City at Wembley.

He opted to start Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal ahead of David Raya, despite Kepa’s history of errors in high-pressure games. The decision proved costly, as he was at fault for the opening goal, failing to hold a cross at the back post.

Arteta also chose Kai Havertz to start in midfield in the absence of Eberechi Eze. Havertz struggled to control the midfield and failed to link effectively with Viktor Gyokeres.

Lack of Creativity

The Gunners struggled to adequately replace Eberechi Eze against a creative and dominant Manchester City side.

Starting Kai Havertz in midfield left Arsenal lacking the link between midfield and attack, making their play predictable and easy for City to defend.

The absence of creativity exposed a rigidity in Arsenal’s approach, ultimately contributing to their defeat.

Over-Reliance on Set Pieces

With creativity stifled, Arsenal leaned heavily on set-pieces in an attempt to break down Manchester City.

However, City were well-prepared, comfortably winning most aerial duels and neutralizing Arsenal’s threats.

The Gunners’ failure to find alternative attacking solutions highlighted their dependency on corners and free-kicks, a trend that has characterized much of their campaign.

Poor Game Management

Arsenal started the game brightly, controlling possession in the opening 25 minutes.

Yet, Manchester City quickly took command, restricting the Gunners to just 37% possession overall.

Despite City’s dominance, especially in the second half, Arteta failed to implement tactical adjustments, leaving Arsenal unable to regain control and ultimately leading to defeat.

Late Substitutions

Mikel Arteta faced criticism for his delayed response to Manchester City’s dominance.

His first two changes, bringing on Riccardo Califori and Noni Madueke, only came in the 67th minute, by which time City had already scored twice in quick succession (60th and 64th minutes).

The late substitutions limited their impact and did little to alter the course of the game.
