Ex-Aston Villa midfielder tells Declan Rice what he must do to be among the world’s best midfielders
Former Aston Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker has advised Declan Rice on what he must continue doing to be considered among the best midfielders in world football.
Nigel Reo-Coker believes Rice must maintain his improved goal-scoring record to elevate himself into the “world-class” category.
Rice once again demonstrated his growing influence for Arsenal during their 2–0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night, a result that secured the Gunners’ progression to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
The England international delivered an impressive all-round display and capped his performance with Arsenal’s second goal of the night to seal the victory at the Emirates Stadium.
Speaking during analysis on CBS Sports Golazo, Reo-Coker praised Rice’s character and work ethic but insisted that adding more goals to his game will ultimately determine whether he can be regarded as one of the elite midfielders in the world.
“Humble and hungry, that’s the way to describe him,” Reo-Coker said. “Only thing that was missing which he was criticized for is scoring goals and now he is doing that.”
“If he continues to score goals and a player of his quality, you’re looking at least 15 goals a season because he is capable of that, then you can start to say maybe he is in that world class region.”
The former midfielder also highlighted the level of competition Rice faces when being compared to other top midfielders in Europe.
“For me, you are competing against the likes of Vitinha, another top player at Paris Saint Germain in this competition as well,” he added.
“He score goals but he also does everything else that Declan does. Declan has got all the ability in the world, if he score more goals and continue to do that now, and with Zubimendi coming to Arsenal, that let him get forward, then we can have that conversation that he is definitely in that World Class category.”
Rice has been one of Arsenal’s most influential performers since arriving from West Ham United in the summer of 2023.
The 27-year-old has played a key role in Mikel Arteta’s side as they continue to compete across multiple competitions this season. So far this campaign, Rice has registered five goals and 11 assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.
Overall, the midfielder has scored 21 goals and provided 31 assists in 148 matches for Arsenal since his move to the Emirates Stadium.
Following his consistent performances, Arsenal have reportedly opened discussions with Rice’s representatives over a potential contract extension beyond his current deal, which runs until 2028.
The North London club are keen to secure the long-term future of the England international amid interest from several top European sides. Arsenal remain confident that an agreement can be reached, with Rice understood to be happy at the club.
With less than two months remaining in the season, Rice will be aiming to maintain his impressive form as Arsenal continue their pursuit of major silverware across all competitions.
