Arsenal survive 'off-night' in Germany to set up winner-takes-all London decider

0 2

Arsenal were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie after a late penalty from Kai Havertz rescued the visitors in Germany.

The result leaves the tie evenly poised ahead of next week’s decisive second leg at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal entered the match with a perfect record in the Champions League this season but struggled to impose themselves for long periods at the BayArena.

Mikel Arteta’s side began the game brightly and created the first clear opportunity of the night.

Gabriel Martinelli came close to opening the scoring when he struck the crossbar after being picked out by Viktor Gyokeres inside the penalty area.

Despite that early chance, the contest quickly settled into a cautious and largely uneventful first half.

Leverkusen defended compactly and disrupted Arsenal’s rhythm through a disciplined midfield display.

The visitors struggled to create sustained attacking pressure as the match drifted without many clear chances.

Arsenal’s strong set-piece threat was also largely neutralised as they failed to win a corner during the opening half.

Leverkusen began the second half with far greater urgency and immediately threatened the Arsenal goal.

David Raya produced a sharp save to tip a header from Martin Terrier over the crossbar moments after the restart.

However, the resulting corner proved decisive.

Robert Andrich was left unmarked at the far post and powered a header past Raya to give Leverkusen the lead.

The goal marked the first time Arsenal had fallen behind in the competition this season.

Leverkusen grew in confidence following the breakthrough while Arsenal continued to struggle to create clear openings.

Arteta responded by introducing Havertz and Noni Madueke from the bench in search of greater attacking threat.

The substitutes eventually provided the moment that changed the match.

Madueke produced a determined run into the penalty area before being brought down by Malik Tillman.

The referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot despite protests from the home players.

Havertz stepped forward to take the kick against the club where he began his professional career.

The German forward calmly slotted the ball past Janis Blaswich to level the score in the closing minutes.

Havertz celebrated modestly after scoring against his former team.

The equaliser ensured Arsenal avoided taking a deficit back to London.

Although far from their most convincing performance, the Gunners will take encouragement from securing a result away from home.

The draw leaves the tie finely balanced with everything still to play for in the second leg at the Emirates Stadium.
