Eze credits 'Holy Spirit' after netting Arsenal’s winning goal against Mansfield Town
Arsenal midfielder Eberechi Eze has reacted to his decisive strike during the club’s 2–1 FA Cup fifth round win over Mansfield Town on Saturday.
The summer signing, who came on in the second half, curled a superb effort into the top corner to restore Arsenal’s lead and ultimately seal the win.
Earlier in the match, Noni Madueke had given the Gunners the advantage in the first half, but Will Evans brought Mansfield back into the contest with an early goal after the restart.
However, in the 66th minute, the former Queens Park Rangers (QPR) midfielder fired a powerful shot from the edge of the box to hand Arsenal the victory.
Speaking to ESPN, Eberechi Eze credited the ‘Holy Spirit’ for inspiring his match-winning goal and reiterated his determination to make an impact whenever he gets the opportunity to influence games.
“I am possessed by Holy Spirit. I saw the opportunity and space to get the shot off and whenever I am within and around the box I want to try to create and make things happen,” Eze said. “Yeah, today [on Saturday] I scored and I thank God for it.”
The England international also praised Arsenal’s overall performance and stressed the importance of progressing to the next round of the competition.
“It is a special competition and we all want to play in it but the main thing is getting to the next round and that’s what we have set out to do. It wasn’t easy, it was a difficult game but we put in the performance where necessary,” he added.
The 27-year-old, who has endured a challenging campaign with the Gunners, has nonetheless been in impressive form in the FA Cup.
His latest strike took his tally in the competition to three goal contributions, one goal and two assists in three matches.
With Arsenal advancing to the next round, Eze will be eager to maintain his fine form as the Gunners continue their pursuit of a potential quadruple.
