Paul Scholes makes Arsenal & Man City title claim after weekend wins
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has said that Arsenal and Manchester City don’t deserve to win the Premier League title this season.
The Gunners are currently top of the league standings with 64 points, five ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side, who have a game in hand against Crystal Palace.
Arsenal registered a hard-fought 2-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday, while Man City had an equally tough outing at Leeds on Saturday, winning by a solitary goal.
Despite those victories, Scholes is not convinced that either of those clubs should be Premier League champions and joked that they should not hand out the trophy.
He said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast: “If I had to pick one of them, it would be [Man] City, but I know every team whoever wins a league, you say at the end of it they deserved it. I am struggling to find which team.
“Do you know what I mean? None of them have convinced me that they should be Premier League champions. I don’t think they should give the trophy out this year.”
Scholes repeated in the podcast that Arsenal could be the ‘worst’ Premier League champions, but United hold that record in our opinion after winning the league with just 75 points.
Back in 1996/97, the Red Devils lifted the trophy ahead of Newcastle United, Arsenal and Liverpool, who are all finished on just 68 points and were separated on goal difference.
There has been plenty of talk about Arsenal’s unconvincing way of picking up victories, but the only thing that matters is the result. The Gunners deserve to win it if they finish top after 38 matches.
It won’t be straightforward with Man City right in the title mix. Arsenal have a slender advantage over the Cityzens and need to keep on winning before they meet at the Etihad Stadium next month.
A first league victory at the Etihad since 2015 would put Arsenal in a good position to lift the title. A stalemate may not be a bad result either if the Gunners have a bigger points advantage by then.
Arsenal’s immediate focus will be on Wednesday’s league trip to Brighton & Hove Albion. Man City will be hosting relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest on the same night.
