Arsenal have the "financial muscle" to sign £65m striker - report

0 3

Arsenal have the financial muscle to spend over £87 million on Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez this summer, according to Sport.

The Argentine is only in his second season with the La Liga giants, but this has not stopped the speculation linking him with an exit.

Barcelona have been regularly linked with the World Cup winner, but Sport claim that it is nearly impossible for them to afford him.

Arsenal and Chelsea are mentioned as the clubs with the ‘financial muscle’ to spend over £87m on the former Manchester City star this summer.

However, it appears Atletico are determined to keep hold of the 26-year-old and may not entertain his departure for anything less than £175m.

Arsenal unlikely to make Alvarez move

The former Man City man had a brilliant debut campaign for Atletico in 2024/25 after his initial £65m move. He scored 29 goals and provided eight assists.

Alvarez may struggle to replicate such statistics this campaign. He has only 12 goals and six assists thus far and has not scored in La Liga since November 1.

The Argentine has experienced a drastic dip in form. Arsenal may continue to monitor him, but a summer transfer appears unlikely on the cards, in our view.

Arsenal could be willing to spend £87m on Alvarez, but Atletico seem determined to keep him, having set a staggering £175m price tag on the player’s head.

For such a massive outlay, the Gunners could be better off looking elsewhere.

Arsenal may want a competitor for the number nine role rather than an assured starter. The focus could be on recruiting a younger marksman with huge potential.

Gabriel Jesus seems the most likely candidate to make way if a new striker arrives. The Brazilian’s contract expires in June next year and could be sold for a cut-price fee.
