"Well he's in pain" - Martin Zubimendi reacts to fresh injury setback for Gunners teammate
Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi has spoken openly about the condition of his midfield partner, Mikel Merino, following the long-term injury Merino suffered.
Zubimendi made the comments after Arsenal secured their place in the Carabao Cup final with a narrow victory over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners won the second leg 1-0 at home, sealing a 4-2 aggregate win after their 3-2 victory in the first leg.
Zubimendi was involved in the match and played his part as Arsenal controlled the tie and edged past Chelsea once again.
After the game, the Spanish midfielder was asked about Merino and the impact of his injury on the squad.
Zubimendi gives honest update on Merino
Speaking to Cadena Ser after the match, Zubimendi did not hide the reality of Merino’s situation.
When asked about his team-mate, he said, “Well, he’s in pain. He’s a very professional person who takes care of himself and always thinks about what’s best for the club. I know he’s the one who’s most hurt, but the damage his injury has done to the club is significant.”
The comments reflected both concern and respect for Merino’s attitude during a difficult period.
Zubimendi made it clear that Merino continues to put the club first, despite the pain he is experiencing.
He also pointed out that the injury has affected the team, underlining how important Merino is to Arsenal.
Premier League dream remains alive
Arsenal currently sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
With their strong position in the league and a cup final secured, belief continues to grow around the club.
Zubimendi was also asked whether this season could finally be the one where Arsenal win the Premier League.
Responding to the question, he said, “Well, among other things, yes. The complete dream would include more things, but I’ve realised that it’s given a lot of importance here, and after everything I’ve experienced at Arsenal, we really deserve it, because it’s very difficult to win.”
Arsenal will now turn their attention back to league action.
They will be hoping to continue their impressive run of form when they welcome Sunderland to the Emirates Stadium for their Premier League clash.
The focus remains on maintaining momentum as the season moves into a decisive phase.
