Arsenal make first move to sign £55m star on deadline day, club respond

0 1

Arsenal have been linked with a possible move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, according to Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The north London club are actively searching for another midfield option after a long term injury setback suffered by Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino.

That injury has forced Arsenal into the transfer market as they assess last minute solutions to strengthen their midfield options for the season.

Tonali, who is 25 years old, has grown into one of Eddie Howe’s most trusted players since his arrival at the club.

He has regularly featured in midfield alongside Bruno Guimarães, with the pair forming a strong and reliable partnership in the centre of the pitch.

Newcastle are believed to have already turned down an early approach for the midfielder, showing their reluctance to sell.

The Magpies see Tonali as a key part of their plans and are not keen on losing an important player late in the season.

Tonali’s growing role at Newcastle

Tonali joined Newcastle United during the 2023 summer transfer window after completing a move worth £55 million.

The Italian midfielder arrived from AC Milan with high expectations and quickly settled into life in English football.

Despite facing a lengthy suspension of ten months due to gambling-related charges, Tonali returned stronger and more focused.

His absence did not reduce Newcastle’s faith in him, with the club continuing to back him during that difficult period.

Since returning to action, Tonali has worked his way back into the starting lineup and regained his place in midfield.

Tonali has also re-established himself as an important figure within the Italian national team setup.

Arsenal interest faces major obstacles

This season, Tonali has made 35 appearances for Newcastle United across all competitions.

During those matches, he has registered five assists, showing his ability to support attacks from deeper positions.

Tonali was also part of the Newcastle squad that ended a long wait for silverware in 2025.

The club secured their first major trophy in 70 years, a moment that further cemented his place in team history.

Arsenal’s pursuit of the midfielder is expected to remain difficult due to Newcastle’s firm stance. At this point, Newcastle remain determined to keep Tonali, making any potential deal hard to complete.
