Jamie Carragher names key Arsenal stars who will deliver the Premier league title
Former Liverpool defender and television pundit Jamie Carragher has played down claims about Arsenal lacking mental strength.
Instead, he believes the issue sits firmly in the attacking areas of the pitch.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the former England international explained that Arsenal do not have true world-class forwards.
He stressed that elite attackers often make the difference when teams push for the Premier League title.
“I don’t think Arsenal lack mental strength – they lack quality in attacking areas,” he said.
“Do they have a genuine superstar in attack? I’ve always had this feeling with Arsenal for a number of years and I felt that was the reason why they didn’t go on and win the Premier League.”
“You think what Mo Salah did for Liverpool last season, what Erling Haaland’s done or Kevin De Bruyne at Manchester City. Arsenal lack that type of player”
Carragher suggested that history shows how vital match winners are in title races. He believes Arsenal have been missing that final edge in the attacking third for several seasons.
Lack of attacking stars remains key issue
The pundit also shared his view on Arsenal’s overall progress in recent years. He admitted that he does not feel the team has improved greatly during that period.
He added: “I don’t necessarily think Arsenal have got much better in the last couple of years, I actually think Man City and Liverpool have dropped off.
“I still think Arsenal will win the league and are the best team, but they do lack genuine world-class quality at the top of the pitch.
Carragher pointed to creativity as the main concern rather than pure finishing. In his view, Arsenal do not create enough chances for their forwards to thrive.
Despite his concerns, Carragher still sees Arsenal lifting the title this season. However, he feels their success will rely more on structure than attacking flair.
Defensive strength could decide the title
Carragher then highlighted four players he feels will shape Arsenal’s title push. He believes defensive stability will be the main factor behind their challenge.
He further said: “They’re going to try and win the league in a different way and if they are to win the league, the big reason will be the two centre-backs, the goalkeeper and Declan Rice.”
Arsenal’s attacking problems have been clear throughout the season. The Gunners have struggled to create chances regularly.
Gyökeres has also found league goals hard to come by this campaign. Bukayo Saka has seen a slight dip in form after being a consistent threat.
These issues have led to links with Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez. Reports suggest the Argentine international is unhappy with his situation in Spain.
Mikel Arteta now faces pressure to find solutions with his current squad. Arsenal have the third-lowest share of goals scored by forwards in the league.
Leandro Trossard and Gyokeres lead the charts with five goals each. That return underlines the scale of Arsenal’s attacking struggles.
The return of Kai Havertz from injury could offer some help. However, his lack of minutes due to his long spell of injury means Arteta must work quickly.
The Arsenal manager needs his attackers to rediscover confidence. Only then can the club hope to finally turn strong seasons into major trophies.
